Florida officer airlifted after being shot at gun range

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A female officer is recovering after she was shot at a gun range in Florida earlier this week.

According to the Village of Pinecrest Police Department, one of their officers was shot in the forearm during a pre-scheduled training exercise.

According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, the woman was shot by another female officer at the Homestead Training Center, located on Southwest 304th Street. Surrounding officers applied a tourniquet and rushed her to a nearby hospital. The shooting was believed to be accidental.

A former Miami Police Chief told WTVJ that the tarps, held up by barrels, acted as a tight, enclosed space to mimic tight entries officers may have to deal with in a real situation. But even with measures in place, accidents can happen.

The woman was initially taken to one hospital but had to be airlifted to another facility. Officials said she has since been released from the hospital and is expected to fully recover.

In a statement from the department, officials said, “She is very much looking forward to recovering and getting back to what she loves most…Policing.”

Police said the shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. They did not release any further details.
