Flat tire sparks friendship between Mobile Co. sheriff’s deputy and a local woman: Smiles Behind the Shield

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A friendship sparked between a local woman and a Mobile County Sheriff’s deputy after one of them has car troubles in a shopping center.

WKRG News 5 showed up at the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office to surprise Deputy Rachel Bohannon and recognize her as our Smiles Behind the Shield Award winner after she stepped up to help.

Lillie Busch, Bohannon’s newfound friend, is the woman who nominated her.

“Hey Lillie, how are you?” Bohannon said.

“Do you remember her?”

“I do. We still talk,” Bohannon said.

That relationship started over Busch’s flat tire a few months ago.

“It was one of those slow flats where I didn’t know what I was looking at,” Busch said.

Something no one wants to deal with alone. That’s when she spotted Deputy Bohannon, who happened to just finish a 12-hour shift, getting out of her patrol vehicle.

Even after a long day, Bohannon decided to lend a hand and look at Busch’s tire.

“She also helped me coordinate with my dad for insurance, and she waited with me until the tire repair man got there and what meant a lot to me also was she asked if I felt safe with that guy there,” Bohannon said. “I got the tire fixed, and she also gave me her number and just told me to let her know I made it home safe.”

“I knew she was a female; it was getting late, and she was just a vulnerable target, so I stayed with her,” Bohannon said. “Then we actually started talking, and she lives right across the street from me, and we have a lot of friends in common, so it all worked out. We still talk on the daily now.”

An act of service Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said speaks to Bohannon’s character.

“She was off duty after working a 12-hour shift, and I learned that she didn’t put in overtime for it which a lot of people would have, so I commend you (Deputy Bohannon) for that,” Burch said. “I mean, this is what public service is all about.”
