Flag flying at half-mast at Toronto school named after Nelson Mandela

TORONTO, Cananda - The flag at a Toronto public school named after Nelson Mandela is flying at half-mast.

Nelson Mandela Park Public School in Regent Park, just east of the city's downtown core, is holding a special ceremony today for the South African icon who died on Thursday.

Mandela visited the school — previously known as Park Public — on Nov. 17, 2001, when it was renamed in his honour.

On the same trip to Canada, he was made an honorary citizen of the country.

Students and staff will gather today at 10:30 a.m. for a ceremony honouring Mandela and his legacy.
