Five Kansas Walmart stores impacted by salmonella recall

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A nationwide retail chain is recalling one of its products from five Kansas store locations due to fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on May 13 that Walmart is recalling one lot of its “Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds” which come in 32 oz. packages. Walmart is recalling the seeds as they may contain salmonella.

Salmonella can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or older adults and those who have weak immune systems. Healthy people who come into contact with salmonella may develop symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, salmonella can lead to severe arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

The FDA says no reports of illness have been received yet in association with the recalled seeds. However, the products are still being recalled out of an abundance of caution. More information about the recalled seeds can be found below:

Walmart keeps a list of stores impacted by this recall on its website. Walmart locations in Kansas that sold the recalled product include the following:

  • 115 W. Willow Street, Colby

  • 3101 E. Kansas Avenue, Garden City

  • 2424 N. Taylor Avenue, Garden City

  • 2160 Commerce Road, Goodland

  • 250 E. Tucker Road, Liberal

People who bought the recalled seeds are asked to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
