Firefighters battle pair of blazes

Apr. 20—HIGH POINT — Firefighters battled a pair of house fires Thursday night , and in one a person was burned while trying to extinguish a kitchen grease fire.

The bigger of the two was reported about 10:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of Pine Valley Drive in the northwest part of the city, where an occupant of the house was burned while trying to put out the grease fire, Deputy Fire Chief Jayson Valade of the High Point Fire Department said.

The injuries didn't appear to be severe, but the person was transported to an area hospital, Valade told The High Point Enterprise on Friday.

Firefighters contained the fire quickly, he said.

"It was a small fire that took a few minutes to get under control," Valade said.

The other fire happened about 6:10 p.m. at a house in the 300 block of Windley Street in east High Point. The first crew arrived to find flames burning extensively at the rear of the residence.

No one was injured, and the local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Valade said.

A High Point Police Department incident report indicated that no one was in the house at the time of the fire.
