Fire at historic hotel undetermined due to damage

TEXAS TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A historic hotel was destroyed in an early morning fire in Wayne County.

The fire marshal was called to the scene but could not determine the cause of the fire due to all the damage.

What is left of the White Mill’s Hotel is a pile of burnt debris completely leveled to the ground. The call came in around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning and took crews three hours to put out the flames.

There are no injuries and the building was unoccupied during the time of the fire.

The hotel which is owned by Settlers Hospitality was under renovations 28/22 News spoke to the planning commission in Texas Township and they say just this past Monday, April 1 the township gave Settlers Hospitality the go-ahead to begin renovations which included a sprinkler system, a 1,000-gallon water tank for firefighters, and new areas to park.

The hotel was going to be transformed into housing for settler hospitality employees.

But for the residents in Texas Township, it’s a sad day to see a staple piece of history burn down

“I didn’t hear anything but what I heard from my family this morning in text messages, that it was very quick it was very emotional when I pulled in and looked across and it wasn’t there like I said it was a staple in the community, it was a gathering spot,” explained Michelle Mcconnell co-owner Watson Bros Inc.

The fire marshal was unable to determine the cause of this fire, 28/22 News will keep you updated with any developments in this story both on air and online.
