Fire burns at least 22 acres in Dixie National Forest, officials say

ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) — A fire in the Dixie National Forest has burned at least 22 acres according to Utah Wildfire officials.

The fire was initially reported on Monday, April 29 near the Oak Grove Campground in Washington County. At that time, officials said about five acres were burned.

The flames have since spread to about 22 acres while crews continued attempts to slow the spread. Fire activity and intensity of the flames began slowing as the day cooled into the evening hours. By Tuesday afternoon, crews managed to 50 percent contain the fire.

Parts of Utah under ‘freeze watch’ as temperatures threaten to plummet

Details on what caused the fire are limited, however, fire officials have determined the source to be a UTV that caught fire in the area. That fire then spread into the wildland vegetation.

Utah Fire Info said there were five engines, one helicopter and one hotshot crew working to extinguish the flames.

This is the first time the area near the Oak Grove Campground has been threatened by a spreading wildfire. In 2021, an unattended campfire led to nearly 700 acres of vegetation to burn. That wildfire prompted a temporary flight restriction in the area and a forest service road to close.

As of Wednesday, May 1, the 2024 Oak Grove Fire has not forced any closures or restrictions in the area.
