Fire breaks out at historic church building in Kamloops, B.C.

A historic church building in downtown Kamloops, B.C., is on fire.

Fire crews were called out just before 9 a.m. PT this morning to the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church building at 1136 6th Ave.

The former church building is the oldest public structure remaining in the city, with construction having begun in 1887, according to the city's website.

As of 9:30 a.m., crews were still on site fighting the blaze. A burning shopping cart was seen against the side of the building.

People travelling in downtown Kamloops are told to expect significant delays in the area.

At 9:19 a.m., B.C. Hydro also reported a power outage affecting almost 2,000 customers across the city, including the downtown area.

It was not clear whether the fire and outage are linked. The B.C. Hydro website says the cause of the outage is still under investigation.
