Fire breaks out in Croton garage

Apr. 9—A midmorning fire inside a Croton commercial garage Monday caused extensive damage to the roof.

New Castle Fire Department Assistant Chief Josh Riley reported the fire at Lou Thomas Auto at 306 N. Ray Street broke out just before 10:30 a.m. Just after Thomas raised a vehicle on a lift, he heard a crackling sound, Riley said. He saw flames coming from the cab of the vehicle and tried to put the fire out himself using a fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful.

"There was serious roof damage," Riley said.

Thomas waited outside with his German shepherd while firefighters fought the blaze.

The New Castle Fire Department was called for a general alarm after the fire was called into 911 by neighbors.
