Feet of snow buried some Vermont towns over the weekend - how much snow fell and where.

It may be spring, but that didn't stop Mother Nature from dropping a doozy of a snowstorm on Vermont. Snow totals across the state from the weekend ranged from 4 inches to a whopping 33 inches − nearly 3 feet of snow in some locations.

This winter has certainly been an abnormal one with an early season snowfall that yielded to many warm, dry days without temperatures falling to the freezing mark. Now that buds are on the trees and bears have exited their dens earlier than usual, multiple feet of snow cover the landscape, making it look more like winter than it has in months.

Just how much snow did Vermonters receive during the March 22 and 23 snow event?

Which towns in Chittenden County got the most snow

The National Weather Service's Burlington office collects snow total reports from spotters across the state, which it reports as unofficial observations. In the 36-hour period over the weekend when people sent in their totals, it appears Chittenden County received less snow than much of the state.

Only areas of Franklin and Grand Isle counties had recordings that were lower. These counties in the Champlain Valley and around Lake Champlain often receive less precipitation than other areas of the state.

There was a 3.5-inch spread between Chittenden County towns. St. George came out with the most with a recording of 10.5 inches. The least amount was from east/southeast Underhill with 7 inches. However, other parts of Underhill − specifically north/northeast − received some of the most in the county at around 9 inches. Coming in at second most was Shelburne with 9.7 inches and third was Winooski at 9 inches. Hinesburg, Huntington and part of South Burlington all received more than 8.5 inches.

Where was the most snow in Vermont?

Windsor County had some of the most impressive snowfall totals with a dozen towns receiving 2 feet or more of snow. The highest recording was Windsor with 33.1 inches. Hartland received 31 inches, Proctorsville and Woodstock got 28 inches. Ludlow, White River Junction and Springfield were in the 26-inch range. Rounding out towns in Windsor County that received at least 2 feet of snow were Norwich, Rochester, Cavendish, Chester and Quechee.

Other towns were digging out from under 2 feet of snow, including Wallingford (at 30 inches) and Shrewsbury in Rutland County; Little River State Park in Washington County; and Topsham in Orange County. In Rutland and Orange counties, a majority of the observations were in excess of 15 inches.

Ski resorts were basking in the brisk business over the weekend. Jay Peak was glad to have a full parking lot and with 28 inches of fresh powder, Stratton Resort proclaimed a "springing back to winter."

Who knows what the weather has in store for the rest of spring, but Vermonters may not want to store those snow blowers or change their winter tires just yet.
