BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Federal funding will help a Four State police department purchase the latest technology in crime prevention.

Senator Jerry Moran announced the funding Thursday (3/28) for the Baxter Springs Police Department. The grant money — $166,000 — comes from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Baxter Springs PD plans to upgrade their outdated body cameras and tasers. The department is also buying cameras for the patrol cars — something they currently do not have.

Senator Moran says it’s important to equip rural areas with tools that larger cities have access to.

“When they’re doing their jobs with the latest technology and the right kind of training, they’re not making the mistakes that might cause harm to somebody in the community,” said Jerry Moran, U.S. Senator from Kansas.

“Without these funds, this project would probably be a 5-to-10-year project for us to accomplish all this. Because of the funds he was able to secure and help us out, we’re able to accomplish this in less than a year. So, we’re very grateful for this,” said Baxter Springs Police Chief, Brian Henderson.

Chief Henderson says he hopes to have the new equipment in the next few months.
