FD: ‘Devastating’ damage from St Joseph Co. fair fire

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A Saturday fire at the St. Joseph County Grange Fair has caused about $2.8 million worth of damage.

Fair Manager Christina Yunker issued a statement Tuesday detailing the damage.

“Please know that we hear you and are also devastated,” Yunker stated. “We are strong and will adapt and overcome.”

The fire was caused by a power line shorting out, which caused arcing and sparking, according to a Tuesday post from the Centreville Fire Department. Then, the department says the tar-coated roof of Barn 42 caught on fire, and the flames spread rapidly because of the wind.

“The amount of damage is devastating,” firefighters wrote, noting that when the fire broke out, Barn 42 was storing around 26 boats and trailers.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, but Barns 41 and 43 were also damaged, along with power and internet connections.

Yunker said the property will remain closed until the cleanup is finished.

“We will continue to keep the fairgrounds closed until clean up is finished for the safety and security of everyone,” Yunker said in a statement. “Our goal is to restore normalcy as quickly as possible, while allowing the continued inspections (and) assessments from insurance companies.”
