FBI Denver releases report on scammers
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — FBI Denver office has released a new report showing how scammers are targeting Coloradans in a big way.
According to the report, in 2023 alone scammers stole $187 million from Coloradans, ranking the state 7th in the nation for complaints per capita.
Assistant special agent in charge with FBI Denver, Leonard Carollo has some advice on how to protect yourself by phone and online.
“Once they obtain the victim’s trust they direct the victim to a link, to click on or a phone number, and through that, that’s when the victim’s will be directed or encouraged to transfer some type of funding.”
The most important tools to protecting yourself in the digital world is understanding the risk and knowing when to walk away or hang up and avoiding the temptation to click suspicious links or texts.
