Fayetteville shooter sent to prison in deadly encounter on Cude Street in 2022

A Fayetteville man was sentenced to at least five years in prison last week in a fatal 2022 shooting on Cude Street.

Anthony Ray Evers Jr., 35, pleaded guilty April 10 to voluntary manslaughter, discharging a firearm in an enclosed area and possession of a firearm by a felon in the Dec. 10, 2022, killing of Markus Alricho McKnight, 35.

Evers was initially charged with first-degree murder, according to court records.

He was sentenced to five to seven years in prison and was given credit for the 14 months he spent in jail awaiting trial, the record shows.

According to an arrest warrant, following an argument between Evers McKnight outside a home in the 300 block of Cude Street, Evers left and returned with a gun, shooting McKnight who ran into the house and was found by police on the porch.

According to the autopsy report, McKnight was hit in the chest, back and arm. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Evers was gone when police arrived. He was arrested at his Bobbie Street home more than a year after the shooting, the record states.
