Two people killed in Route 80 crash in Hackensack

Two people were killed and several others injured in a horrific overnight crash on Route 80 in Hackensack, state police confirmed on Wednesday.

The crash occurred at 11:43 p.m. Tuesday near milepost 66.6. According to a preliminary investigation, a Toyota SUV traveling eastbound on the local lanes struck the curbed median, veered into the express lanes, and collided with a Volvo tractor-trailer, according to state police. The impact caused the Volvo to crash into the center concrete median and enter the westbound express lanes.

The Volvo then collided with an Isuzu box truck, which then entered the westbound local lanes and burst into flames. A GMC SUV traveling westbound also collided with the Volvo tractor-trailer.

The driver and passenger of the Isuzu box truck died, state police confirmed. Their identities are pending confirmation. The driver of the Volvo tractor-trailer, a 63-year-old man from Temple, Texas, and his passenger, a 60-year-old man from Killeen, Texas, were seriously injured and taken to a local hospital. The driver and passenger of the GMC SUV had minor injuries.

The express lanes of Route 80 remained closed until just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday. All lanes have since been reopened in both directions.
