New fat-based treatment could replace anesthesia for joint pain

KAUNAS, LITHUANIA (BLOOM) – Joint pain isn’t just for older adults anymore. It’s becoming more common among people in their 20s, with knees, hips, and hands often the first to suffer. A new fat-based treatment promises relief without the need for anesthesia, particularly for those with grade II or III joint arthrosis.

The procedure, known as Liposmart, is a significant advancement over traditional methods that typically require anesthesia. By combining liposuction with fat injection, this treatment offers a safer, less invasive alternative to major surgery, promoting joint regeneration and reducing pain.

Dr. Tomas Kadusauskas, a surgeon at Nordorthopaedics Clinic in Kaunas, Lithuania, has started using this improved method with remarkable results. “We’ve found a way to bypass the need for anesthesia by integrating this treatment with plastic surgery,” says Dr. Kadusauskas. “We conduct liposuction first, and if there’s any excess fat, we inject it into the joints.”

This method is particularly effective for those with grade II or III joint arthrosis, especially when other injections haven’t worked. While the Liposmart treatment can postpone major surgery by halting degeneration and encouraging regeneration, it’s not a permanent fix. “The effects typically last for about a year, depending on the severity of the osteoarthritis,” Dr. Kadusauskas notes.

Post-treatment care is crucial for optimal results. Dr. Kadusauskas advises starting physiotherapy soon after the procedure to strengthen muscles and improve balance. Intense physical activity should be avoided for one week to 10 days, after which patients can gradually return to their normal workout routines.

Recovery time varies based on the extent of the treatment. “If you had Liposmart on multiple areas, expect a longer recovery compared to someone who had only one or two areas done,” explains Dr. Kadusauskas.
