Fans have mixed reactions to Tupac and Biggie miniseries

The USA miniseries Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. kicked off Monday night to mixed reviews from fans. Most liked the show itself, and their main gripe was with the casting — particularly for the roles of Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace (aka Notorious B.I.G., Biggie, or Biggie Smalls), portrayed by Marcc Rose and Wavyy Jonez, respectively.

One thing fans could agree on was the use of what appeared to be real footage from the night Biggie was killed mixed in with the film. First there is footage from inside the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, where Biggie was attending a party just moments before his death, and footage from the chaos that ensued immediately after he was shot.

Another bright spot was Aisha Hinds, who plays Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace. In her emotionally-charged scene, the audience is reminded of something that gets lost in the lore of Tupac and Biggie.

When speaking to detective Russell Poole (Jimmi Simpson), Wallace says, “And all this stuff about him [Biggie] and Tupac? They were friends. Do you hear me? They were friends.”

Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on USA.
