‘He was family’: DC rapper mourned after he was killed in robbery

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — An outpouring of mourning and outrage is flooding social media over the killing of a local rapper at a marijuana dispensary in Northwest D.C. on Wednesday.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) are now searching for two suspects, who were caught on surveillance camera.

They say the two entered the Hotbox Uptown Dispensary on Georgia Ave. NW just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say the suspects demanded property and money from the victims, who complied.

During the robbery, one of the suspects fired a shot, hitting one of the victims, an employee. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

He was identified as 41-year-old Philip Prendergast, of Silver Spring, Md. — also known as local rapper “Phil Da Future.”

One of the dispensary owners called the incident “tragic.” He said Prendergast was more than an employee – he was family.

One neighbor says she’s worried about the violence.

“It’s terrible, it’s awful,” said the neighbor. “I’m always concerned about violence in this area or just violence in general as a mother.”

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest.
