FALKVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Mayor Ken Winkles is home after spending much of the month recovering from a stroke.

The Falkville community came together to greet the mayor Wednesday at town hall.

“We’re just glad to have him home,” said Debbie Higginbotham, the cousin of Winkles. “He’s done a lot for the town. He’s special to all of us, and he’s coming right along thanks be to God.”

When Winkles arrived at Decatur Morgan Hospital on March 5, his speech was slurred and he had lost the use of his right side. After two weeks of rehab, he is getting around with the help of a walker and his voice is returning.

“Anything I needed they were there for me,” Winkles said.

During Winkles’ recovery, the community he serves has had the opportunity to support him, including fundraisers, phone calls, and lots of prayers.

“We’re just glad to have him back,” said Winkles’ friend Tom Summerford. “It means a lot to be out here just representing the town and representing Ken and letting him know everyone cares about him.”

Winkles has served as Falkville’s mayor since 2016, and before being elected, he spent 10 years on the town council.

The community is continuing to support Winkles with an upcoming fundraiser. ‘Kickin’ it for Ken,’ a co-ed, all-ages kickball tournament is scheduled for April 14.

If you would like to participate, you can call town hall at (256) 784-5922 for more information.
