Authorities identify suspect shot to death by Fairmont police officer after knife attack

FAIRMONT, N.C. (WBTW) — The suspect who was shot and killed Monday night by a Fairmont police officer after stabbing him has been identified.

Police Chief Jon Edwards said Arlette Christina Wiggins, 40, was shot and killed by officer Denzel Burney.

Authorities said it happened at about 8:30 p.m., but did not give a location. They said the 23-year-old Burney, a sworn officer of 15 months, fired his service weapon and hit Wiggins, who later died. Burney was stabbed multiple times by a knife and was taken to a local hospital.

The case is being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Edwards expressed gratitude to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, Robeson County Communications Center, Maxton police, Lumberton police and Lumberton Fire Department.

Fairmont is a town of about 2,600 in Robeson County.
