Expect delays next week on westbound I-70 for rockfall work in Glenwood Canyon

DENVER (KDVR) — Starting April 15, Colorado Department of Transportation crews will be working next to the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon to reconstruct rockfall protection.

The section in need of repair is near milepost 123, the Shoshone Power Plant exit, and will take place west of milepost 123.5, Blue Gulch. Traffic impacts should be expected April 15-26 on Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

CDOT to repair guardrail on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon following semi crashes

While the work is ongoing, motorists should expect a single-lane closure in the westbound lanes. The repairs will not affect eastbound lanes.

The section of the roadway has a history of rockfalls. The debris flows caused severe damage at Blue Gulch in 2021. On March 7, CDOT reported a safety closure for a rockslide at milepost 123.5 on the outside westbound lane.

In its release, CDOT said it also anticipates replacing the guardrail along eastbound I-70 in Glenwood Canyon. The agency said it will coordinate to decrease traffic impacts “as much as possible for travelers in the canyon.” Real-time lane closures can be seen in the COtrip Planner app or on COtrip.org.
