Here’s how to exchange guns for gift cards at Sacramento Police Department’s firearm buyback

If you have guns lying around, you could get gift cards this weekend through a gun buyback program under Sacramento Police Department.

The Police Department and Kaiser Permanente will provide a $50 Amazon gift card in exchange for functional firearms from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kinney Police Facility, 3550 Marysville Blvd.

The program aims to reduce gun violence and promote community safety while allowing residents to anonymously give up firearms, police said in a news release.

Officials will only accept three firearms per adult until gift cards last. Ammunition will not be accepted and guns must be unloaded, police said.

Residents are asked to bring a form of identification and stay inside their vehicle — no walk-ups allowed. Participants should store guns in the trunks of their vehicles, police said.

“We reserve the right to limit gift cards an individual may receive regardless of the number/type of firearms surrendered,” police said in the news release.

In years past, dozens of residents have lined up an hour before the event started. Police collected 128 firearms in May 2023. In October 2022, residents turned in 275 guns for a $50 Amazon gift card.
