Ex-wife charged linked to Naples man, girlfriend's June shooting.

Deputies on Friday arrested the former wife of a man nearly killed by gunfire in June, Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said.

On June 1, Scotty McCandless and Amy Chesser were traveling on Immokalee Road near Twin Eagles Boulevard when detectives say two men shot them.

Detectives say the charges of accessory after the fact against Rebecca Gabay, 37, are related to, but not directly connected with, the shooting.

McCandless and Gabay were married and have two children.

The shooting caused a rollover crash in Rural Estates, with the pair suffering life-threatening injuries that required brain surgery.

At the hospital, McCandless told police his ex-wife hates him, and they had a child custody battle. Police were told Gabay said she would have him killed before he got custody of their children, an arrest report detailed.

According to their custody agreement, McCandless was supposed to receive more visitation with the children two days after he was shot.

Detectives say Gabay assisted Julian Mendes-Wolf, 29, and Ryan Toranzo, 39, who were each charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Chesser is well-known in the swamp buggy racing community,

Mendes-Wolf and Toranzo remain in the Collier County Jail awaiting trial.

Gabay was previously charged with interference with custody and removing/concealing minors contrary to a state or court order. The Collier County Jail did not yet log Gabay's most recent arrest Friday afternoon.

Ryan Guy Toranzo, 38.

Toranzo will remain in custody without bond on two attempted first-degree murder counts, in addition to a $250,000 bond for one counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Along with Julian Mendes-Wolf, 28, and Rebecca Gabay, 36, he's one of three arrested in the attempted murders of swamp buggy racer Amy Chesser and her boyfriend, Scott McCandless. Only Gabay has since been released from custody.

Detectives have conducted interviews, issued subpoenas, executed search warrants and processed multiple electronic devices for digital evidence since the shooting. Their investigation is ongoing.
