Ex-Tehachapi councilman pleads no contest to trying to meet teen for sex

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A former Tehachapi city councilman and Kern County Fire engineer has pleaded no contest to attempting to meet someone he believed was a 16-year-old boy for sex, according to court records.

Daniel Shane Reed pleaded no contest Friday to contacting a minor to commit a sex act and was sentenced to eight years in prison, records show. Two other felony counts were dismissed.

According to court documents, Reed sent nude photos and engaged in sexually explicit conversations on the gay dating app Grindr even after being told he was communicating with a 16-year-old.

The other person was actually a Kern County sheriff’s investigator.

Reed was arrested the afternoon of March 9 after arriving near Valley Baptist Church on Victor Street, where documents say he planned to meet the teen.

A convicted sex offender, Reed resigned as a councilman and firefighter after arrests for similar behavior more than a decade ago.

In 2011, Reed was arrested on allegations he took a 16-year-old boy to motels in Pismo Beach, Wasco and Bakersfield and performed sex acts with him at each location.

While out on bail, Reed twice met a 13-year-old boy for sex, sheriff’s officials said. With the additional charges, Reed pleaded no contest in 2012 to engaging in lewd or lascivious acts with a minor and was sentenced to a decade in prison.
