FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Lisa Spoors was sentenced to five years behind bars on Wednesday following the death of Hoover High School student 15-year-old Rashad Al-Hakim Jr. in October 2022. Spoors has pleaded no contest in the hit-and-run took place outside the Fresno school.

The 40-year-old defendant was charged more than two months after the incident. The charges of murder, DUI causing injury, and hit-and-run resulting in death were filed in January 2023; in February 2024 those charges had been downgraded to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit-and-run resulting in death.

On October 4, 2022, Spoors was detained and questioned by police following a hit-and-run incident involving a Hoover High School student, later identified as 15-year-old Rashad Al-Hakim Jr. He succumbed to his injuries a week later and died in the hospital.

On December 22, 2022, Spoors was charged by the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office in connection with the death of 15-year-old Rashad Al-Hakim Jr. Spoors turned themselves in five days later on December 27.

On January 19, 2023, Spoors was released from jail after posting the standard 10% of their $150,000 bail. Spoors’ defense attorney, Marc Kapetan, cited his client’s financial hardships and argued for Spoors’ bail to be reduced. Spoors was allegedly paying $4,000 per semester in tuition fees to get a Master’s Degree but was terminated as a graduate teaching associate because of this incident.

On March 2, 2023, Spoors was back in jail and present in Fresno County Superior Court for a preliminary hearing.

On February 23 2024, Spoors pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing permanent injury or death.

On March 10, Spoors was sentenced to five years behind bars for the death of 15-year-old Rashad Al-Hakim Jr.
