Events planned for Oconee, Athens during National Crime Victims' Rights Week

The Western Circuit District Attorney’s Office is sponsoring several events during National Crime Victims' Rights Week, which is observed beginning Sunday across the nation.

The Survivors Week Celebration has a theme this year of “How Would You Help?" according to a release from the DA's office.

The office has partnered with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Athens-Clarke County Police Department and other community agencies to provide the various events.

A candlelight vigil to remember victims of crime is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse on Washington Street.

A Public Safety Townhall is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Athens-Clarke County Library. Speakers for the gathering will be District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez, Sheriff John Q. Williams and Police Chief Jerry Saulters. Community and personal safety issues are planned for the discussion.

A candlelight vigil is also planned for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Oconee County Courthouse on Main Street, Watkinsville.

On Friday at 6 p.m., a Youth, Women’s and Men’s Workshop and self-care events will be held in the Twin Angels Community Center, 399 Helican Springs Road.

Additionally, a Family Resource Fair is planned for 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Twin Angles Community Center.

“We are doing our part to engage in preventative measures by providing access to community resources, support for crime survivors, and answering the call to action to create a safe environment for our community,” Gonzalez said in a statement.
