Event focuses on foster care needs in the Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An event is scheduled on April 30 to spotlight foster care needs in the Las Vegas valley. Meant to bring awareness and resources to the foster community, “An Evening with the Stars of Foster Care” will be held at Pearson Recreation Center.

The event focuses on the need for Black families in the community. Latrice Vaughn, a foster parent who will speak at the event, said that while anyone can be a family, it’s important for children to have influences they can relate to.

“Just to have someone do their hair and experience someone that looks like them is so important,” Vaughn said.

According to County data, four Black foster homes are available for every 10 Black children.

Allyson Manumaleuna, a supervisor with Clark County Family Services, said over 3,000 children are in foster care.

“On any given day, there’s 80 to 100 kids waiting to be placed, so we are always in need,” Manumaleuna said.

The event starts at 6 p.m., and anyone interested in fostering children is welcome to attend.

Those interested can donate new or gently used items to Peggy’s Attic, a location where foster families can get clothes and supplies. The location is currently looking for clothes for toddler boys.

More information is available by contacting Peggy’s Attic at 702-455-5424.
