Evansville has already received a month's worth of rain in May, with 16 days to go

Traditionally one of the wettest months of the year in Evansville, May is living up to its reputation.

The city recorded 1.86 inches of rain between midnight and 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Evansville Regional Airport, and more is on the way this week.

Evansville's already at 5.21 inches of rainfall for the month with 16 full days to go. Tuesday marked the third day this month that more than an inch of rain was recorded in a 24-hour period.

An average May in Evansville sees 5.12 inches of rain, a mark the city already has eclipsed. And the storms aren't done yet. There's more rain in the forecast for the city Tuesday afternoon, then more chances for wet weather on Wednesday (50 percent), Thursday (30 percent), Thursday night (60 percent) and Friday (80 percent).

"Slight" chances of rain are in the longer-term forecast for Saturday through Monday.

Tuesday's downpours caused some road issues in Vanderburgh County, where floodwaters closed:

  • Old Princeton Road between Hilltop Road and Stacer Road, and

  • Baseline Road from U.S. 41 to Old Princeton Road
