A planned development in Calabash will now see the construction of even more homes.

Hidden Valley is a planned unit development located along Valley Drive and near Beach Drive in Calabash. The development’s master plan was originally approved with 54 homes.

Now that homes have been built, Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity looked to amend the master plan to add more single-family homes on a 1.67-acre tract that was originally designated as a drain field.

At its April meeting, the Calabash Board of Commissioners held a public hearing, considering and ultimately approving Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity’s request. The move was the first step in permitting the construction of eight additional single-family homes in the community.

In total, with the existing 54 single-family homes, the Hidden Valley community will now consist of 62 homes on about 9.5 acres of land.

Citing the need for more affordable housing in Brunswick County, Carlo Montagano, executive director of Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity, said these homes would be part of the organization’s homeownership program, in which the organization helps families in need accomplish homeownership by offering below-market interest rates for their properties.

Montagano told the StarNews earlier this year that many Habitat families are working single parents or seniors, and about half are Black, first-time homeowners.

While these homes will be located within the existing Hidden Valley community, Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity recently broke ground on its first subdivision in Leland. Late last year, the organization broke ground on “Fuller Court,” a six-acre subdivision on Highland Hills Drive NE in Leland dedicated to Habitat for Humanity partner families. Along with 10 homes, the community will include a park and basketball/pickleball court for the entire Highland Hills community.

Founded 20 years ago in 1993, Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat for Humanity builds homes with volunteer labor, tax-deductible donations and ReStore proceeds and then sells those homes to partner families with a below-market interest rate.

Montagano said the organization expects to construct 10 homes during the 2024-25 fiscal year.
