Severe thunderstorms, bringing with them large hail, are possible in Windsor-Essex Tuesday night, Environment Canada says.

"Thunderstorms over Lower Michigan are expected to reach southwestern Ontario this evening," the weather agency said in a watch issued Tuesday evening. "A few of these thunderstorms will be capable of producing hail up to ping pong ball size."

Damaging winds and tornado threats will remain over lower Michigan, Environment Canada added.

Environment Canada reminded residents to take cover in case of thunderstorms, noting that hail can cause property damage and injury to people.

Earlier this year, researchers said a spring storm in Amherstburg brought the first tornado of the year in Canada.

After visiting a site to the site south of Windsor to observe the damage, researchers from Western University's Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) say they have determined an EF-1 tornado landed in Malden Centre on March 16.
