Brittney Griner is speaking out for the first time in an interview since she was released from Russian detention in 2022. The interview is part of a new 20/20 special airing this week on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
Officially titled 20/20: Prisoner in Russia, the one-hour special features the WNBA star sitting down with ABC News’ Robin Roberts to talk about her nearly 10 months in a Russian prison. The Brittney Griner special will air on Wednesday, May 1 at 10 p.m. ET / PT on ABC.

Griner was heading to Russia to play during the WNBA’s off-season when she was detained on Feb. 17, 2022 at an airport in Moscow, after illegal vape cartridges with cannabis oil were found in her baggage. The basketball star was sentenced to nine years in prison, but was released in December 2022 in a so-called “prisoner swap” arranged by President Biden.
The 20/20 special comes on the heels of Griner’s new book, Coming Home, which is a first-person account of her arrest, her time in Russia, and how she kept her spirits up in hopes of an eventual release.
