A New York City man may have been chasing two people who tried to rob him when he was shot and killed by NYPD police officers, according to ABC7, NBC New York, and The New York Times.

Police received multiple reports of a man with a firearm and shots being fired on East 57th St. and Linden Blvd. in East Flatbush around 6 p.m. local time Monday, the NYPD said in a press conference shortly after the incident.

Four officers who happened to be canvasing the area in an unmarked car saw a man chasing another man and a woman while shooting at them several times, the NYPD added. The on-site officers then jumped out of their car as several more shots were fired, the police added.

The officers subsequently shot at the gunman who was taken to Kings County Hospital and later pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.

The two people he was shooting at were not injured but were transferred to nearby hospitals for observation, police added Monday, noting they had recovered the firearm used in the alleged mugging.

At the time, officers didn’t know the gunman’s reason for shooting at the two victims but suspected they had some sort of dispute. Another male, 60, was also shot in the area, however, authorities said they don’t know how he was injured.

On Tuesday, the deceased shooter was identified as 20-year-old Nathan Scott, according to ABC 7. The man he was chasing was also identified as Jeremiah Adams, 19. Police said, per the outlet, that Adams and the woman, whose name has not been made public, allegedly tried to mug Scott.

One witness who spoke to ABC 7 anonymously said he saw the two people being chased, telling the news station, “Someone comes out and starts talking to the gentleman and he says 'They just robbed me, they know me and they robbed me, why would they rob me? They know me.' "

Officials told The New York Times that Scott was shooting at a man who stole his wallet. The man allegedly admitted to stealing the wallet and said he was chased by Scott for multiple blocks.

Adams was taken into custody on Tuesday for an unrelated shooting on March 7, NBC News reported. He was charged with attempted murder, robbery, and weapon possession. He was also accused of allegedly stealing a 17-year-old’s cell phone last month. He is currently not facing any charges for Monday’s incident.
