Enrollment open for Joplin summer school, which will run May 29-June 27

Apr. 4—Enrollment is open in Joplin for the 2024 summer school for any student entering kindergarten through the 12th grade. Summer school will run May 29-June 27.

Enrollment will be online at joplinschools.org or through an existing PowerSchool ParentPortal account.

Elementary classes will be held this summer at:

—Cecil Floyd Elementary for Cecil Floyd, Eastmorland and Soaring Heights students.

—Irving Elementary for Irving, Stapleton and Kelsey Norman students.

—Dover Hill Elementary for Dover Hill, Jefferson, Royal Heights and McKinley students.

Middle school classes will be held at South Middle School.

Elementary and middle school students will participate in several field trips, with elementary students selecting summer camp-style electives offered each day while also being exposed to core subjects as a way to supplement or boost learning from the regular academic year, according to an announcement from the Joplin School District.

"We have highly engaging learning experiences for students looking for opportunities to go deeper with their learning," Katy Booher, summer school director, said in a statement. "We'll also offer supplemental reading services for students who need additional support over the summer, experiential learning to help students develop problem-solving skills, and several traditional learning experiences to sharpen academic skills."

High school

At Joplin High School, incoming students can enroll in online health, online personal finance, summer weights/PE, credit recovery, musical theater and Freshmen Transitions.

Middle school students who sign up to take summer weights/PE can do so as a stand-alone course or as part of their enrollment in the full middle school summer program.

"For our JHS Eagles, we offer credit and non- credit courses to meet a variety of student needs," Booher also said. "Students can complete coursework over the summer to allow for more flexibility in their schedules during the school year. Many students who participate in extracurricular activities during the school year choose to take advantage of summer credit coursework."

Students who do not attend Joplin schools during the regular school year are invited to enroll and participate for free.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants. Limited transportation services will be available.

More information is available by contacting the school district at 417-625-5200.
