On day three of the NFL draft, New England kicked off the day by drafting Georgia wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell. Mitchell has the personality and heart that the Patriots look for in a young player.

Mitchell, 22, weighs in at 6-foot-1, and 196 pounds. Due to a torn ACL and missing the 2013 season, his college career stats aren’t impressive which makes him an undervalued player. Last season, Mitchell caught 58 passes for 865 yards with five touchdowns. However, New England always sees the potential in players like Mitchell. According to Pro Football Focus, Mitchell is a “varied route runner, picking up a reception on nine different route types in 2015. That’s even more impressive when you consider that he had just 58 receptions”. When given the opportunity, Mitchell is going to try and make those connections on passes from Tom Brady.

Rookies are always under the watchful eye of the NFL during their first year. Some get into trouble for substance abuse and make less than logical decisions, but Mitchell chose to go a unique route. Mitchell was a Bulldog on the field but off the field he leads the life of an author. Throughout his younger years, Mitchell struggled to read. Once his college football career was put on hold due to his torn ACL, he spent more time sharpening his reading skills. While he was injured he spent a lot of time attending a women’s book club. Mitchell eventually wrote a book called “The Magicians Hat” and now he travels throughout the state reading his book to children.

For a rookie in the NFL, Mitchell brings a positive and mature attitude to New England. There is a reason that players like Dominique Easley don’t thrive in New England. We all know the franchise likes players to have a good work ethic and a pleasant personality. Mitchell is a new addition that is widely welcomed into New England.
