The last selection for New England was at the beginning of round 7. The Patriots used the 225th overall selection to take wide receiver Devin Lucien out of Arizona State University.

Lucien stands in at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, and claims to be just as good as any wide receiver in this draft. Last season, Lucien led the Sun Devils with 66 catches for 1,075 yards and eight touchdowns. He had four 100-yard receiving games, which included three straight games (Arizona, California, West Virginia) to close out his last college season.

Lucien was able to perform well even when he wasn’t at 100 percent. He had injury issues with his hamstring, ankle, and a concussion. However, during his last three games, he was able to deliver by making 26 catches for 534 yards and five touchdowns. Even Bill Belichick was impressed to see that Lucien was able to thrive as a football player even though he was a transfer student from UCLA. Lucien was able to find his rhythm. Belichick said, “You very rarely see a player do what Devin did, transfer within the conference … and I think there was a relationship he had with the quarterback, and that certainly benefitted him. He had a good year at Arizona State, better than what he had previously had at UCLA. ”

Lucien has shown that he is capable of building a relationship with any quarterback. He has some of the best hands in the draft and is capable of running any route on the field. The Patriots are currently stocked at wide receiver and Lucien might find it difficult to earn a roster spot this fall. He definitely has potential and could make it past training camp, further proving that 7th round picks are relevant too.
