Emma Smith pleads Not Guilty in Sparta Walmart arson case

SPARTA, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A woman pleads not guilty to charges stemming from a fire at the Walmart in Sparta. Court records show 18-year-old Emma Smith pleaded not guilty to charges of arson, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, felony criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct.

According to the criminal complaint, on December 26th, Sparta officers responded to Walmart for a report of a fire inside the building. Smith was identified as a person of interest. At the time, she was interviewed and confessed to starting the fire. The initial estimate shows the fire caused approximately $7.6 million in damages. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for June 17th.
