When you are on the road, it is important to be cautious of your surroundings and potential weather threats.

Keith Gunnoe, Director of Mercer County Office of Emergency Management, said high water on roadways can be deadly.

“We stress to people all the time, don’t drive through high water. A foot of water or less sometimes depending on the velocity of that water moving can sweep a vehicle off the roadway. So, the old slogan, ‘turn around, don’t drown’, that still applies,” said Gunnoe.

When severe weather is on the way, be sure to have a way to receive weather alerts.

Gunnoe told 59News paying attention to weather alerts on your phone or radio can prepare you when severe weather is coming your way.

“With cellphone technology now, everybody should have access to some type of weather app or weather alerting device. The old weather radios people would typically have in their home, cell phones do a great job. Pay attention to those alerts,” said Gunnoe to 59News.

With severe weather affecting many West Virginia residents Tuesday, being cautious while at home and driving is vital.

Be sure to have access to alerts and be careful on roadways.
