Elsa Holguin named 2024 ‘Remarkable Woman of Denver’
DENVER (KDVR) — A woman who is getting crucial resources to families who otherwise would be at risk of facing poverty has been named 2024’s “Remarkable Woman of Denver.” Elsa Holguin was announced as this year’s winner on Tuesday morning.
Over the past month, FOX31 and Colorado’s Very Own Channel 2 highlighted four women who have made great contributions to our nation and local communities.
Sharon Madison, the 2023 “Remarkable Woman of Denver,” was there on Tuesday to pass the torch to Holguin.
Holguin migrated to the United States from Mexico at the age of 17 and first worked as a janitor. Now, she is the CEO of the Denver Preschool Program. With Holguin’s help, 5,000 kids a year get the education they need.
Holguin was awarded a $1,000 check to the charity of her choice. She is donating the money to the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado.
Meet all of this year’s ‘Remarkable Women of Denver’ finalists
Along with Holguin, the finalists were: Lynne Holman who is an accomplished occupational nurse and a beacon of change for the Native American community; Barb Kamlet who helps lead Camp Erin, an outlet for hurt people to come and cope freely; and Nikki Libertelli who is using her time and talents to help children in foster care.
The women were honored for their accomplishments and contributions Tuesday on the FOX31 Morning News and Daybreak on 2.
As part of the celebration, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared April 2, 2024, as “Remarkable Women of Colorado Day.”
“We are so proud to honor some of the incredible women who work every day to make Colorado a better place, and the many important contributions of women to our state throughout our history. Thank you for your work to uplift the stories of remarkable women in communities across Colorado. Working together, we can build a Colorado for all where every person can live, work and thrive,” said Polis on Tuesday.
“Remarkable Women” is a nationwide initiative of FOX31 and Channel 2’s parent company, Nexstar Media Group. More than 100 women in local communities where Nexstar has TV stations were honored Tuesday.
Holguin will now be considered for the national “Nexstar Woman of the Year.” All of the local winners will travel to Hollywood for a recognition event, where the national winner will be announced.
