Some Elmwood residents concerned about potential Amazon warehouse impact on neighborhood

ELMWOOD, La. (WGNO) — Two lots off Mounes Street could become a new Amazon delivery warehouse. According to Amazon, it’s a $30 million investment that could create up to 200 jobs, but neighbors worry about its location.

People attending Wednesday’s Jefferson Parish Council meeting expressed concerns about Louisiana’s first Amazon same-day delivery warehouse coming to Elmwood.

A 3-year-old girl disappeared from her Algiers home over 40 years ago. Here’s what she may look like now.

“People get lost all the time. They come in our neighborhoods, so if you’re adding four, three to 400 to 1,000 cars a day, there’s going to be people coming in our neighborhood. We’re concerned about the crime element,” said Larrs Marshall, who lives near the proposed warehouse.

Amazon plans to utilize what it calls “flex drivers” for deliveries, which would be similar to Uber and Lyft, but for packages, with up to 400 flex vehicles delivering about 50 packages each.

“I want to reiterate to council that not all of these vehicles are arriving on the site at one time. There will not be 500 flex drivers at the facility at one time. You’re absolutely right. We cannot do that,” said Amazon Senior Economic Development Manager Jessica Breaux.

Amazon is also said to be working with the Jefferson Parish Council to build a 12-foot sound wall and hire an exterminator. For now, Amazon received the ok to merge the two lots on Mounes Street for the warehouse after a vote to change the property’s zoning.

Lacombe residents concerned about number of sex offenders in area

“You know, again, we’re going to continue to work with Amazon to try to get as many concessions as possible, but we have a site plan to go through, we have a building permit to go through, but we need to continue to move forward in this process to make progress, and for that reason, I’m moving for approval on both of those items,” said Deano Bonano with the Jefferson Parish Council.

Other concerns about the new warehouse include traffic congestion on Al Davis Road. However, Bonano clarified that would be temporary pending the completion of construction on Dickory Road.
