Elmira boys lax beats Corning for the first time ever

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Elmira boys lacrosse history was made Wednesday night in dramatic fashion.

The Express beat visiting Corning 10-8 securing its first win in program history over the Hawks. It was the season opener for both teams but Elmira proved to be the team who wanted it more out of the gate.

Kaiden Green scored four goals for the Express (1-0) while teammate Ryan Stukey netted three goals of his own helping Elmira beat Corning for the first time ever. Both teams played in the Section IV Championship game last season, a game where Corning outlasted Elmira 8-4.

Elmira started their varsity program in 2012 and has tasted defeat in every game against Corning until last night. Coming into the game, Elmira was (0-19) against Corning all-time according to MaxPreps.com.

Evan Garvin netted one of his two goals on the night breaking a 6-6 tie giving Elmira the lead in the third quarter. Corning responded right back to tie the game again at 7-7 just minutes later. In a back and forth battle, Elmira surged past Corning in the end behind two goals in the fourth by Stukey for the win.

Stukey’s final dagger came with just over 20 seconds left on the clock sealing the win. Kohl Hogue, James Freeman and Dom Dinardo scored two goals each for the Hawks in the loss (0-1).

Next up for Elmira is a road test at Vestal Saturday at Noon. Corning hosts Horseheads this Saturday at 1 PM.
