The Morning Show star Mark Duplass has joined the cast of Ellen Pompeo’s new Hulu limited series.

Deadline has reported that Duplass, who plays producer Chip Black in the popular Apple TV+ show, has been cast as the male lead in an eight-part series which has the working title Orphan.

The limited series is inspired by the true story of a Midwestern couple who adopted an 8-year-old Ukrainian girl with dwarfism called Natalia Grace, then started to believe that all was not as it seemed.

In the stranger-than-fiction story, which draws parallels to the 2009 horror movie of the same name, Duplass and Pompeo will play Michael and Kristine Barnett, while Natalia will be played by newcomer Imogen Faith Reid.

The show was first reported back in 2022 with Pompeo announced as an actor and executive producer on the project.

Orphan’s synopsis reads: "As [Michael and Kristine] begin to raise [Natalia] alongside their three biological children, they slowly start to believe she may not be who she says she is.

"As they question her story, they’re confronted with hard questions of their own about the lengths they’re willing to go to defend themselves, falling into a battle that’s fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and ultimately their marriage."

Michael and his now ex-wife Kristine were already in the public eye because of Kristine’s bestselling book about raising their science prodigy son, and in 2019, the couple were charged with the neglect and abandonment of Natalia.

Orphan, which is created, written and executive produced by Katie Robbins, will be told from multiple perspectives to highlight the conflicting thoughts of the central characters.

Pompeo’s lead role in Orphan is thought to be part of the reason for her character Meredith Grey’s reduced presence in Grey’s Anatomy over the last two seasons, and it marks her first acting role outside the ABC medical drama since 2005.

However, Pompeo hasn’t left Grey’s Anatomy for good as Meredith has already featured in season 20, which started last week.

A release date for Orphan is yet to be announced.
