El Paso faces Wind Advisory, gusts may exceed 70 mph: National Weather Service

Strong winds and blowing dust could cause dangerous conditions, especially when traveling along roadways, particularly Interstate 10 and Loop 375, the National Weather Service warns.

Most of El Paso will be under a high wind warning on Monday, April 15, with 35 to 45 mph wind speeds and gusts topping 70 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Some other parts of El Paso will be under a wind advisory for 30 to 40 mph winds and gusts of up to 55 mph.

The high wind warning and wind advisory will be effective from 1 to 10 p.m.

El Paso will see the strongest winds about 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, with 38 mph and 56 mph gusts.

Traveling to surrounding counties could be difficult with widespread dust, especially in nearby Truth or Consequences and Cloudcroft, where gusts could reach 70 mph. Visibility could drop under one mile.

Strong winds could also damage trees and structures and cause power outages.

The combination of high winds, warm temperatures and dry air is also prompting a red flag warning in the region.

Outdoor burning is not recommended, as winds can cause fires to be difficult to control, especially in dense brush. Air quality can also be poor, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will be above normal, with El Paso possibly reaching a high of 84 degrees.

Winds should subside into Tuesday’s early morning hours, according to the National Weather Service.
