Educator of the Week: Ms. Chavez of Woods Elementary School

CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE) – A teacher in Clovis is helping shape the lives of her students.

Gabby Chavez always knew she wanted to make the world a better place. Her way of doing it was to follow the path of becoming an Early Intense Autism Program teacher at Woods Elementary School.

“My favorite part is that I have them for such a long time because by the time we get to sixth grade, I have such a solid foundation,” said Ms. Chavez.

Students first entered her class during their fourth-grade year. In those three years, she gave them hands-on experience with a curriculum she hand-crafted.

“I have such a solid foundation that we can work on them being flexible because they trust me and so building trust with kiddos with autism for kids who might struggle to socialize or put themselves out there and do things out of their routine is great,” said Ms. Chavez.

Before becoming a teacher, Ms. Chavez dedicated her time to special education. She learned ways to take traditional learning styles and teach her class how to use them and be independent.

“Her heart for the kids is incredible she definitely loves them all so much and you can tell its not just a job for her,” said IA Teacher Karley Heinrichs.

When students are complete, the next journey is to head off to secondary school.

“When we treat them as equals, they respond very well to that, and I feel like that’s something different that we push in my room,” Ms. Chavez said.

A big congratulations to Ms. Chavez at Woods Elementary School. Your hard work has given you the honor KSEE24’s Educator of the Week.
