Eastern Oregon University names Geissinger, Rockafellow to key campus leadership positions

LA GRANDE — Eastern Oregon University has made strides in bolstering its leadership team with the appointment of two key figures.

Peter Geissinger has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, EOU announced on May 16.

Geissinger, set to commence his new role on July 1, holds a doctorate in physics from the University of Bayreuth in Germany, and a master’s in physics from the University of Ulm, with additional graduate studies undertaken at Oregon State University.

Prior to his recent appointment, Geissinger served as the dean of the College of Science, Technology, Mathematics and Health Sciences at Eastern, where he played a role in spearheading program expansions and guiding the college through the challenges of the pandemic. Geissinger has been fulfilling the role of interim provost since 2023.

“I am thrilled to be appointed provost of Eastern Oregon University and am grateful to President (Kelly) Ryan for her confidence,” he said in the release. “I look forward to collaborating with the entire EOU community towards our shared objectives of nurturing student success and securing EOU’s future as a gateway to higher education in Eastern Oregon.”

Rockafellow is scheduled to assume her duties on July 15 as the vice president for student affairs. Rockafellow holds a doctorate in education leadership and a master of business administration from the University of St. Francis, alongside a master of science from Western Illinois University and a bachelor of science from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

“During my time on campus, I sensed the palpable energy emanating from both the employees and the students. There’s a profound sense of devotion to EOU and La Grande,” she said in the announcement. “I chose this role because the community boasts a rich legacy of beauty and arts. EOU stands poised to become a nexus for student success and hands-on learning. My family and I are eagerly looking forward to becoming part of this marvelous community.”

Both appointments were made following a selection process involving students, faculty and staff.

“EOU is delighted to extend a warm welcome to Peter Geissinger and Mollie Rockafellow in these pivotal roles,” Ryan said. “Both leaders bring a wealth of experience and a steadfast commitment to academic excellence and student triumph. “Their leadership will be instrumental as we forge ahead in enhancing our educational offerings and enriching our campus life.”
