EastEnders is set to air an hour-long special later this month coinciding with the anniversary of Lucy Beale's death.

Though there have been schedule changes recently due to live sport, this appears to be an editorial decision rather than a forced change – and we have some details about what will occur.

A synopsis of the episode, which will air on April 17, reads: "A shocked Jay realises he needs to tell his family some news, the Beales gather to remember Lucy, the fundraiser event takes a dark turn, and Elaine supports a friend in need."

The fundraiser refers to Yolande Trueman's ongoing charity project with Pastor Clayton, which has seen her challenge him over his inappropriate behaviour toward her.

The episode comes 10 years since the shocking reveal of who killed Lucy Beale as part of the BBC soap's 30th anniversary celebrations.

As the whodunit storyline gripped the nation, it came to light that Lucy's brother Bobby was behind her death after he struck her with a jewellery box following a confrontation.

Ian and Jane Beale discovered his involvement in the crime, with Ian persuading Jane to cover up the killing but eventually having to come clean after Lucy's secret lover Max Branning went to prison for the murder.

Bobby was eventually convicted of the crime, with Max freed from prison and embarking on a rampage against the Beales which led to Jane leaving the soap in fear of her and the Beale children's safety.

With Bobby, Ian, and Lucy's mum Cindy all back in Albert Square, many fans have speculated that Jane could make a return in the special episode – or even Lucy herself.

The music box murder weapon resurfaced in 2023 during Cindy's return storyline where Gina and Anna Knight discovered she was their mother – only, they knew her as Rose Knight, wife to their father George.

It was discovered that Cindy's infamous death had been faked and she was instead put in witness protection after turning in information about gangster Jackie Ford, starting a new life and family alongside George.

However, she suffered a breakdown in the aftermath of Lucy's death and walked out on the Knights.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
