East Bernstadt student charged with bringing replica weapon to school

May 7—An East Bernstadt student was taken into custody Tuesday morning after a non-functional replica firearm was found in a backpack.

According to information on the Laurel County Sheriff's Office, the incident came to light when the student tried to enter the school and was detected through the school's metal detector. The student was detained by the school's School Resource Officer.

Although investigators stated that no students were ever at risk, the student has been charged. No name is being released due to the student being a minor.

The investigation into the incident is being continued by the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.
