East Bernstadt man named in two indictments

May 23—A stolen vehicle and a stolen license plate are two of the charges against an East Bernstadt man who was indicted on Friday.

Mark Anthony Gavin, 28, of Chapel Road, is charged in two separate indictments and is in custody of the Laurel County Correctional Center, held under $100,000 cash bond.

The first indictment charges Gavin with receiving stolen property over $10,000, theft of motor vehicle registration plate, first-degree complicity to trafficking in controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and first-degree persistent felony offender.

In that case, Gavin reportedly possessed a 2021 Kia Soul that had been stolen from a car rental business on Jan. 30. When found, Gavin had a stolen license tag on the vehicle. The indictment also states that Gavin was in possession of over two grams of methamphetamine and scales and baggies, which are commonly used for illicit drug use. He is additionally charged with first-degree persistent felony offender for three prior felony convictions — all in Laurel County and all for trafficking in controlled substances.

The second indictment charges Gavin with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and first-degree persistent felony offender, on Jan. 30.

An indictment is an accusation only and does not imply guilt or innocence. Persons are considered innocent until proven guilty under state and federal law.
