Early voting starts in Georgia House District 139 race to fill seat vacated by Richard Smith’s death

COLUMBUS. Ga. (WRBL) — Early voting for the special election to fill Georgia House Seat 139 began this morning in Muscogee and Harris Counties.

The seat was vacated by the January death of Rep. Richard Smith, a longtime member of the General Assembly.

There are 28,000 District 139 voters in Muscogee County. And another 11,00 in Harris County at precincts in Cataula, Ellerslie, and Waverly Hall. The Muscogee County precincts are Epworth, Britt David, St. Peter, St. Paul’s, St. Andrew’s, Chattahoochee, and Moon Road.

Early voting in Harris County is being held at Board of Elections and Registration Building in Hamilton. Harris County hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The early voting in Muscogee County is being held at the City Services Center on Macon Road. Hours are 7:30 am. To 5:30 p.m. Election day is April 9th.

There are four candidates on the ballot – businessman Sean Knox, retired oral surgeon Donald Moeller, and former Muscogee County Republican Party Chairperson Carmen Rice. All three are running as Republicans. Independent Robert Mallard is also on the ballot.

This race will be back on the ballot in the May primaries. The April election is to fill the remainder of Smith’s term. The May primaries and November general election will determine who will represent the district for the next two years.

Knox, Moeller and Rice are all on the Republican primary ballot. Mallard did not qualify. Carl Sprayberry qualified as a Democrat.
