Bellefonte man injured, dump truck mangled after crash with train in Centre County
A Bellefonte man was injured and a dump truck was left mangled Thursday in a collision with a train in rural Centre County, making it the first crash of its kind in the county since 2004.
The 44-year-old driver of the dump truck was hit on the passenger side by a northbound Nittany and Bald Eagle train about 9:43 a.m. Thursday near 7021 S. Eagle Valley Road in Worth Township, state police at Rockview wrote in a report. The train had four loaded cars.
The empty bed of the dump truck was separated from the rest of the vehicle, police wrote. It was pushed about 150 yards down the tracks.
Trees and brush lined both sides of the track. The crossing was marked with crossbuck signs that are in an X shape with lettering that indicates a railroad crossing.
The dump truck driver was transported to UPMC Altoona for evaluation of suspected minor injuries, police wrote. Port Matilda Fire Co., Port Matilda EMS, Mount Nittany paramedic, the Centre County Emergency Management Agency, the state Department of Transportation and Eagle Towing assisted.
Both lanes of South Eagle Valley Road were restricted between Ardery Hollow Road and Beaver Road. A message left with the North Shore Railroad Co. was not immediately returned.
The last crash that involved a train in Centre County took place in Spring Township, PennDOT data showed.
