Dump Day in Sacramento: How residents can dispose of excess garbage for free

(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento residents will have a couple of chances to get rid of excess trash for free.

Caltrans is hosting “Dump Day” events from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on April 13 and May 18 at 8491 Fruitridge Road in Sacramento.

People planning to dump trash at the event will need to be prepared to show their ID and a utility bill with an address within Sacramento city limits, according to Caltrans.

Staff will be on site and will limit how much of some types of waste will be accepted, the agency said. Officials said waste may not be accepted once space is filled.

Caltrans said it will accept the following items on a limited basis:
•General household garbage and waste such as metal, plastic, fiberglass, fabric, glass, untreated wood, and landscape trimmings
•Up to four tires per vehicle (must be removed from rims)
•Up to four of each of the following types of bedding waste: mattresses, box springs and futon mattresses (detached from frame or base)
•E-waste such as televisions, computer monitors and accessories, VCRs, CD/DVD players, stereo equipment and microwaves
•Hazardous waste such as paint, batteries, oils, aerosol cans, household chemicals, corrosives and hazardous bases (these items will be collected separately)

Caltrans said it will not accept treated wood waste, concrete, dirt, rocks, asphalt, sand, brick, construction materials, asbestos, and compressed gas.

The agency will also not accept appliances with Freon or compressed gas such as refrigerators and air conditioners and waste from commercial trucks or vehicles won’t be permitted.
